A pensioner from Preston has died while climbing Helvellyn.

The man in his 70s, who has not been named, died after falling while climbing the Lake District peak.

Emergency teams were scrambled to the mountain site last week after receiving reports that a man had fallen from Striding Edge.

They found the man, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A spokesman for Patterdale Mountain Rescue said: “He sustained fatal injuries in the fall, whilst taking part in an activity which he loved in great weather.

“He was flown from scene by a Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter to hospital in Carlisle.

A police spokesman added: “His death is not being treated as suspicious and the coroner has been informed.”

Members of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were in attendance and called on the help of their colleagues in the Penrith team before they were stood down.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service also attended.
